- 2IVV = VOO, ITOT = VTI, AGG = BND, IXUS = VXUS — functionally identical pairs
- 3iShares has a broader selection of specialty and sector ETFs than Vanguard
- 4Pick the brand your broker makes easiest to buy — the performance difference is negligible
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I switch from VOO to IVV?
No reason to. They hold the same stocks at the same fee. If you already own VOO, keep it. If you are starting fresh and your broker favors iShares, IVV is equally good.
Is ITOT as good as VTI?
Effectively identical. ITOT tracks the S&P Total Market Index (3,600 stocks) while VTI tracks the CRSP U.S. Total Market (4,000+ stocks). Both charge 0.03%. The extra 400 micro-cap stocks in VTI make negligible difference to performance.
Why is AGG more popular than BND?
AGG (iShares) has more assets ($100B+) and higher daily volume than BND, making it preferred by institutional traders. For individual investors buying and holding, BND and AGG are interchangeable — same index family, same cost, same yield.
