Don't have time? Here's what you need to know:

  • 1iShares offers equivalent ETFs to every Vanguard core fund at the same or similar cost
  • 2IVV = VOO, ITOT = VTI, AGG = BND, IXUS = VXUS — functionally identical pairs
  • 3iShares has a broader selection of specialty and sector ETFs than Vanguard
  • 4Pick the brand your broker makes easiest to buy — the performance difference is negligible

iShares: The Biggest ETF Family in the World

iShares (owned by BlackRock) manages over $3 trillion in ETF assets across 400+ funds. They offer ETFs for virtually every market, sector, and strategy. For most core positions, iShares and Vanguard ETFs are interchangeable — same indices, same expense ratios, same long-term performance.

The main reason to choose iShares over Vanguard: your broker may offer iShares-specific perks, or you prefer the iShares fund structure for a particular index. If you use Fidelity, iShares ETFs trade commission-free and integrate smoothly with the platform.

Best iShares ETFs Ranked

IVV is the most direct VOO competitor — identical S&P 500 holdings at the same 0.03% fee. ITOT is the VTI equivalent. For any Vanguard ETF you would buy, there is an iShares version at a similar or identical cost.

iShares vs Vanguard: Does It Matter?

For core index funds (S&P 500, total market, total bond), there is no meaningful difference. IVV and VOO charge the same fee and hold the same stocks. The performance gap is measured in hundredths of a percent. Pick the brand available at your broker with the smoothest purchasing experience.

Where iShares has an edge: niche and sector ETFs. iShares offers more specialty funds (thematic, factor, ESG, fixed income) than Vanguard. If you want a specific sector or strategy ETF, iShares likely has an option. For core portfolio positions, the choice is a coin flip.

Tip: iShares ETFs use the MSCI index family for international funds, while Vanguard uses FTSE. The main difference: MSCI classifies South Korea as an emerging market; FTSE classifies it as developed. This slightly changes the composition of IXUS vs VXUS.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I switch from VOO to IVV?

No reason to. They hold the same stocks at the same fee. If you already own VOO, keep it. If you are starting fresh and your broker favors iShares, IVV is equally good.

Is ITOT as good as VTI?

Effectively identical. ITOT tracks the S&P Total Market Index (3,600 stocks) while VTI tracks the CRSP U.S. Total Market (4,000+ stocks). Both charge 0.03%. The extra 400 micro-cap stocks in VTI make negligible difference to performance.

Why is AGG more popular than BND?

AGG (iShares) has more assets ($100B+) and higher daily volume than BND, making it preferred by institutional traders. For individual investors buying and holding, BND and AGG are interchangeable — same index family, same cost, same yield.
