Project in Today's Dollars, Not Fantasy Dollars
A growth calculator will happily show you a seven-figure balance if you feed it a 10% nominal return. The problem is that a million dollars in 30 years will not buy what a million dollars buys now — inflation of around 3% a year roughly halves purchasing power every 24 years. If you plan around the nominal number, you'll overestimate how comfortable that balance makes you.
The fix is to project in real terms: use a 7% return for a stock-heavy portfolio and read the answer as today's money. If your calculator only accepts nominal returns, mentally discount the result, or set the inflation field if the tool provides one.
