The numbers tell the cautionary tale. ARKK, the best-known thematic fund, roughly doubled in 2020 and then fell about 67% in 2022, leaving many investors who bought near the peak deep underwater. Thematic funds also charge far more than broad index funds — typically 0.40-0.75% versus 0.03% — which compounds against you over time.
